What Most Men Don’t Know About Erectile Dysfunction

November 9th, 2009

Michael Castleman, author of the book, “Great Sex”, has advice on ED that may surprise you.  He makes a distinction between what he calls true ED, and Edis, a term used by sex therapists meaning men’s dissatisfaction with the quality of their erections. Only a small fraction of men age 45 to 60 have “true ED”; A larger but still small number of men over 60 have true Ed, defined as the inability to get an erection, even with vigorous physical stimulation.  Conversely, EDis is characterized generally as the inability to get hard merely through visual stimuli, as you probably did in your 20s.  Edis also means being unable to reach the degree of size, firmness and duration that men typically do in their 20s.

Castleman posits that true ED is caused by physical problems which inhibit blood flow to the penis. EDis on the other hand, is sometimes due to stress and anxiety during sex, which also limits blood flow to the penis; Anxiety and stress is a result of inadequate or no sex education, which is common for most men.  Because…the only “sex ed” most men get is from porn—porn that shows men with huge cocks.  These images lead men to believe they must be as big as the porn actors.  Further, education through porn or a “street education”, hasn’t taught men that women rarely have orgasm through penile vaginal penetration. Women’s orgasms are usually reached by cunnilingus or other clitoral stimulation. Castleman thinks it is amazing how few men know this.  In reality, both men and women reach peak sexual performance when they relax, focus on enjoying each other, and the sensation of skin on skin, not just genitals.

The author states, “just about every man experiences [EDis as a normal part of aging]”.  Men may “droop from minor distractions, anything from donning a condom to hearing a motorcycle roar up the street.” This can be overcome with an ample amount of physical stimulation. He also recommends Viagra and similar treatments for both EDis and ED.

Fast-food Surprise Taken from Man’s Lung

September 17th, 2009

We all know that fast food is bad for us. But I came across a news story that is unbelievable, and puts a new meaning to the old saying that fast food is bad for us. Bad or almost fatal in a North Carolina man’s case. The man who was plagued with coughing fits had a 1-inch piece of plastic removed from his lung. The plastic was a piece of a utensil that he had inhaled nearly two years earlier while gulping down a soda at Wendy’s.

How can you Inhale a Utensil?

Doctors at Duke University Medical Center say the plastic fragment of an eating utensil — with the Wendy’s logo still legible on the side — was likely to blame for the coughing, fatigue and pneumonia spells that plagued John Manley for almost two years. They removed the fast-food foreign object from Manley’s left lung. And the 50-year-old man said he probably inhaled it while gulping a drink from Wendy’s.

The Surprise to Doctors

His doctor said he still remembers his staff’s amazement in the operating room when they pulled it out. “We’re looking at it and realizing that there are letters on it … We started reading out loud, ‘A-M-B-U-R-G-E-R,’ and realized it spelled, ‘hamburgers.’ “Everybody was shocked. We had no clue why something that said, ‘hamburgers’ would be in someone’s lung,” he said. They had read a side of the plastic that spelled Wendy’s motto of “Old Fashioned Hamburgers.”

Why are American’s Addicted to Fast Food?

I know it’s not funny to have something lodged in your lung, but when I read this article I laughed. Are American’s so addicted to fast food that we have resorted to eating the plastic ware at our local Wendy’s? I was baffled that a person could consume a utensil and not know it. I feel bad for him and his wife who probably thought he had cancer or some other terrible condition. Also going through bouts of pneumonia can’t be fun either. This story has further reinforced my theory that fast food is hazardous to our health as a nation.

Obesity in America

America is home to the most obese people in the world. According to the CDC, obesity in adults has increased by 60% within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years. 33% of American adults are obese and obesity-related deaths have climbed to more than 300,000 a year, second only to tobacco-related deaths.  If you are looking for a safe medication that can help you loose weight, you should try Xenical online.  Xenical is a safe, FDA-approved medication to help men and women loose weight.

Fast Food Nation

Fast food has become a large percentage of American’s diet, so it is no wonder that a link has been established between fast food and obesity in America. Some studies have shown that eating fast food for three or more meals each week results in a higher incidence of obesity and larger BMI’s. This is an alarming statistic for a nation with such a high incidence of obesity and a fast food chain on nearly every corner. Studies have shown that families that eat fast food more often are also less likely to keep healthy food like fresh fruits and vegetables in their house.

A Drug-Free Cannabis Plant Is Being Engineered by Researchers

September 16th, 2009

iStock_000005787159Small

In a first step toward engineering a drug-free Cannabis plant for hemp fiber and oil, University of Minnesota researchers have identified genes producing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance in marijuana. Studying the genes could also lead to new and better drugs for pain, nausea and other conditions. The finding is published in the September issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany. Lead author is David Marks, a professor of plant biology in the College of Biological Sciences.

The study revealed that the genes are active in tiny hairs covering the flowers of Cannabis plants. In marijuana, the hairs accumulate high amounts of THC, whereas in hemp the hairs have little. Hemp and marijuana are difficult to distinguish apart from differences in THC. With the genes identified, finding a way to silence them – and thus produce a drug-free plant – comes a step closer to reality. Another desirable step is to make drug-free plants visually recognizable. Since the hairs can be seen with a magnifying glass, this could be accomplished by engineering a hairless Cannabis plant.

Marijuana and hemp are different breeds of the same species (Cannabis sativa), but marijuana contains much more THC than hemp, which is a source of industrial fiber and nutritious oil. Hemp was raised for its fiber – which is similar to cotton but more durable – in the United States until legislation outlawed all Cannabis plants because they contain THC. Today, marijuana contains as much as 25 percent THC, whereas hemp plants contain less than 0.3 percent.

Medical Marijuana

medical-pot

According to the Marijuana Policy Project marijuana and its active components, known as cannabinoids, Can benefit a wide array of medical conditions, including cancer, HIV, multiple sclerosis, and glaucoma. Also included are scientific findings refuting some long-held beliefs about potential health hazards posed by marijuana use, most notably in relation to cancer and neurotoxicity.

Due to government interference and restrictions placed on the use of the actual
marijuana plant for scientific studies in the U.S., a large number of these studies were
able to examine only the medical efficacy of component compounds extracted from
marijuana or, in some instances, synthetic versions of those compounds.

Additional clinical trials, which would require the lifting of governmental roadblocks, are especially
desirable in view of the current availability of vaporizers, which allow use of whole
marijuana without the potential dangers of smoking.

Is there Bacteria Infesting your Showerhead?

September 15th, 2009

Recently in the news I found an article about shower heads carrying large amount of bacteria. The bacteria might not pose a threat to most average people, but it could be a problem for people with weak immune systems, such as the elderly, infants or people with chronic diseases that affect the immune system. These individuals are prompted to take a bath instead of a shower.

The article stated that there are potential disease-causing germs that can become trapped in our shower heads and grow into biofilm, in other words layer of slime that deliver a bacteria blast as well as water. Our shower heads are the perfect place for bacteria to grow, there dark wet and contained. There are several bacteria that can grow, including one that causes lung diseases, another germ called Mycobacterium avium and others known as non-tuberculosis myco-bacteria.

Symptoms that you have possibly contracted one of these Mycobacterium, include fatigue, a chronic dry cough, and shortness of breath. So with that said, what can we do about it? It is recommended to periodically get rid of biofilm on our shower-heads. Replacing the shower-head once a year or more can help. Also metal shower-heads are less likely than plastic shower-heads to grow biofilm. It’s also a good idea to clean your shower-head frequently with a steel brush and good cleaning solution, like bleach.

In the United States, disinfectants and disinfectant cleaners must be reviewed and registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before they can be offered for sale. EPA assigns a registration number for each product and that number must be clearly displayed on every container of the product. Companies submitting disinfectants for registration are required to include current efficacy data to prove that their product kills ALL of the microorganisms listed on the product label. For instance, if the product label claims to kill staphylococcus aureus, then test data must be submitted to EPA to prove that the product when diluted according to label directions kills the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. According to the Technical Director of Coastwide Laboratories.

There are medications available for allergies such as Allegra, Flonase, Nasonex, and Clarinex.  These medications can help, when you are suffering from allergies.  Make sure to visit your local doctor before taking a prescription medication.

New Birth Control Pill News

September 14th, 2009

birth-control

Researchers have found that teenage girls taking low-dose oral contraceptives showed abnormally low levels of bone growth, and sometimes even lost density, compared with teens who took birth control pills with a higher dose of estrogen. The researchers stated that the girls who need oral contraceptives should be informed of the benefits of higher estrogen levels. The study included 82 girls in their middle to late teens a period during which they should be accumulating bone density.

Some Birth Control Pills Safer Than Others

According to European researchers the composition of a woman’s contraceptive pill influences her risk of developing blood clots of the leg and lungs. Scientists have known for quite some time now that oral contraceptives, which contain the female hormones estrogen and progestogen, increase the likelihood of deep vein thrombosis of the leg and pulmonary embolism, but new studies in Denmark and the Netherlands determined that some pills are safer than others. Neither study received funding from any companies that make oral contraceptives.

A first message from the studies is that “the risk when you are taking an oral contraceptive depends on both the estrogen dose and the progestogen dose, and the lower the dose, the less risk,” Lidegaard said. Both studies found that the risk decreases with the length of time a woman takes a combination pill, and that progestogen-only pills and the use of hormone-releasing intrauterine devices are not associated with an increased risk.

For women who want to use an oral contraceptive and are at higher risk because of obesity or a family history of venous thromboembolism, “it would be wise to take a second-generation product,” Lidegaard said.

Energy Bars are Causing Cavities

September 11th, 2009

e-bars

Although candy and soft drinks are known to cause cavities, many people have been surprised to learn their energy bars, and drinks can be just as bad for their teeth as candy.

Dentist have also been surprised by amount of healthy and athletic patients with an increasing amount of cavities. Apparently a dentist tracked down the culprit of all these unnecessary cavities, by asking a patient what she consumed daily. The one thing was consistent in her diet every day was nutrition bars.

“It’s the consistency of these bars,” says Dr. Richard Price, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association and a retired Boston-area dentist. “They’re sticky and when something is sticky it stays in the mouth longer and the longer it stays in the mouth, the more time bacteria have to work on it. That creates an environment that’s not healthy for teeth.”

The problem with energy bars and drinks is that they all have tons of sugar and caffeine and are usually consumed when we are “on the go”. Initially the problem lies with the fact that if we are biking, hiking, running, or just going to work we are not brushing and flossing on the go.

“Bacteria use the stuff in the energy bars to make acid which softens the enamel,” says Dr. Jane Soxman, a spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry. “If you add to it the phosphoric acid in soft drinks or the citric acid in energy drinks or sports drinks, then it’s a perfect storm for tooth decay. Once isn’t bad, but it’s the repeated exposure, the chronic use. Eventually you’ll get a cavity.”

whisp
So what do you do right? Well dentist recommend drinking water, directly after eating an energy bar or drinking an energy drink. Also there are new mini on the go toothbrushes made by Colgate called Wisp that can easily be carried and used on the go. But in my opinion they should be used in conjunction with water to get the bacteria out of your mouth.

Is The Mediterranean Diet A Cure For Type 2 Diabetes?

September 1st, 2009

oilA Mediterranean diet, rich in nuts, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and healthy oils, reduces the likelihood that patients recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes will need drugs to lower their blood sugar, according to a new study.

The Diet Was Tested

Among diabetics who followed the Mediterranean-style diet, only 44 percent required the blood sugar-lowering medicines known as antihyperglycemic drugs, compared to 70 percent of patients who followed the standard, low-fat diet recommended by cardiologists, according to a report in the Sept. 1 edition of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Patients on the Mediterranean-style diet also lost more weight and experienced greater improvements in blood sugar control and coronary risk measures than those on the low-fat diet. According to a report this week from ABC news.

Diet or Common Sense?

So what does this mean for people who just aren’t willing to change their diet? Well I guess there is no way to tell if this particular diet will work for you and help your diabetes unless you give it a try. At the least, it should help your heart health, most of us know that eating good fats/oils is better for our hearts, then say saturated fats. Also fruits, nuts, veggies, and whole grains are great foods for all of us. If they weren’t they wouldn’t be on the food pyramid right? So over all this diet sounds pretty good and I think it would not only benefit those of you with diabetes, but the rest of us as well. Along with exercise and weight loss.

Apple Shaped Men at Higher Risk for Disease

September 1st, 2009

ripe red apple with green leaf isolated on white63% of Americans are overweight and 31% are obese with a BMI in excess of 30.0. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past two decades and according to the U.S. Surgeon General obesity is responsible for 300,000 deaths every year. Research also shows that severe obesity may be harder on men than on women.

Apparently the shape of your body determines your risk for certain diseases. There are three common male body shapes, banana, apple, and pear. An apple body shape puts men at the highest risk for disease, mainly because the weight is being held around the waist, which is more common in men. Women tend to carry more of their weight around the hips, thighs and buttocks also known as a pear shape.

Overall, people who have an apple shape are at a higher risk for a number of conditions known as the metabolic syndrome. Which includes high blood glucose, high blood pressure and dyslipodemia. The problem with these conditions is that, they are all risk factors for coronary heart disease. Which is why it is so important for people who do have an apple shape to do what they can to reduce it. Including, weight loss and exercise. Loosing the waist weight will decrease the risk for many of these issues and for heart disease as well as prevent the occurrence of new problems.

How do you determine if you are at a higher risk for these conditions?

• First of all are you over your normal body weight?

• Do you know your BMI? (BMI is body mass index and it depends on your height, weight and usually your age.) You can go to This Site to determine your BMI.

• When you gain weight do you have to buy new pants?

• Does it feel like you carry most of your weight in your mid area?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are likely to have an apple body shape.

Online Therapy or Face to Face?

September 1st, 2009

Stehoscope

CNN – Computer-based therapy has come a long way since ELIZA, a 1960s computer program designed to emulate (and parody) a therapist. Today, with the Internet, people can use the instant message format to communicate with real therapists. A new study in The Lancet suggests that real-time chat therapy with a psychotherapist is successful in helping people with depression.

Participants were randomly assigned to either receive online cognitive behavioral therapy in addition to usual physician care — which may include antidepressant medication — or to continue their usual care and be placed on a waiting list. The intervention consisted of up to 10 55-minute sessions, five of which were expected to be completed by the four-month follow-up.

So what would you prefer, an online consultation or a face to face with a real doctor? Some of us may be more comfortable with the old fashion way of doing things, but eventually online therapy will be available for all of us. I guess it will be the preference of the patient to decide which route is the right one for them. I also believe that the decision will have a lot to do with what you need to be seen for, counseling will be much easier than say a physical issue, like a rash or mysterious lump.

There has to be benefits to online counseling, especially for people that feel awkward in social situations, and those who need counseling even if they are not feeling well enough to go out to a doctor. I think the advances in medicine are colossal and can only get better and bigger. In the end we will all benefit further from these changes and health care will continue to advance.

Some Candles may Pollute your Indoor Air

August 26th, 2009

Relaxing in your bath tub, surrounded by scented candles seems like a great way to relax. But new research suggests that burning certain kinds of candles may generate indoor air pollutants.

Researchers at South Carolina State University have studied petroleum-based and vegetable-source candles to determine their emissions. They let candles from different manufacturers burn for up to six hours in a small box (8 inches x 8 inches x 26 inches), and then collected and analyzed the substances released into the air.

They found that paraffin-based candles, which are the most popular kind, emitted toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene. Soybean candles did not.

The researchers said that lighting a paraffin candle every once in a while is unlikely to pose a health threat. Although, frequently lighting several candles in an unventilated space could lead to problems. Also it may aggravate asthma, cause allergy-like symptoms, or irritate the respiratory tract.

However whether some candles are safer than others is still debatable, according to one expert. “I think there’s some controversy out there as to which candles are better than others,” says George Thurston, Ph.D., an associate professor of environmental medicine at the New York University School of Medicine.

Thurston urges people to be prudent about lighting any kind of candle — whether it’s paraffin, beeswax, or soybean — in an enclosed space. “Just lighting a match to start a candle creates sulfur pollution in the air,” he adds. “It’s one of the big sources of sulfur in the indoor environment, so using a lighter would probably be cleaner.”

While you aren’t putting your life on the line by lighting a candle, he says you should exercise at least some caution. “You ought to try to minimize your exposure to paraffin wax candles,” says Thurston. “And when you light any kind of candle, you might turn on the exhaust fan; even if it ruins the mood, it vents out the fumes. People just need to use common sense.”
